The Wise Old Man - Мудрый Старик

Description

A wealthy man requested an old man scholar [богатый человек попросил старого ученого] to wean his son away from his bad habits [отучить своего сына от вредных привычек]. The scholar took the youth for a stroll through a garden Stopping suddenly [вдруг остановившись], he asked the boy to pull out a tiny plant growing there [он попросил мальчика вытащить крошечное растение которое там росло]. The youth held the plant between his thumbs and forefinger and pulled it out The old man then asked him to pull out a slightly bigger plant The youth pulled hard [юноша напрягся], and the plant came out, roots and all [и вырвал растение вместе с корнями]. "Now pull out that one» [«а теперь вытащи это], - said the old man pointing to a bush [- сказал старик, указывая на куст].

The boy had to use all his strength [мальчику пришлось использовать все силы], to pull it out [чтобы вытащить куст]. "Now take this one out" - said the old man [«теперь вырви это, - сказал старик], indicating a guava tree [указывая на дерево гуавы]. The youth grasped the trunk [молодой человек схватился за ветку] and tried to pull it out [и попытался вытащить дерево]. But it would not budge "It's impossible", said the boy, painting with the effort [«это невозможно», сказал мальчик, тяжело дыша]. "So it is with bad habits," - said the sage [«так и с плохими привычками», - ответил мудрец]. When they are young [«в самом начале], it is easy to pull them out [от них легко избавиться], but when they take hold they cannot be uprooted [но когда они укрепляться, их невозможно вырвать»]".

The session with old man changed the boy's life Moral [мораль истории такова]: don't wait for Bad Habits to grow in you [не ждите, когда плохие привычки прорастут в вас], drop them while you have control over it [бросайте их, пока вы управляете ими] else they will get control you [иначе потом они будут управлять вами].
